Abstract:

Youth: Choices and Change presents a comprehensive guide to the psychology of change in adolescents and youths, with the purpose of stimulating change in lifestyle behavior, health promotion policies, and socio-cultural attitudes toward healthy lifestyles.

The third part of Section II of the book includes the following chapters:

Chapter Twenty-two / The Community Organization Model

Chapter Twenty-three / The Diffusion of Innovations Theory, Behavior Change Communications Models, and Social Marketing

Chapter Twenty-four / Models of Policy and Legislation Development

Chapter Twenty-five / At A Glance: The Community and Policy Level Theories and Models for Behavior Change

Chapters Twenty-two and Twenty-three review two theories of how to promote change at the community level, including incorporating a community's self-assessment of problems and goals into strategies for long-term behavior change and why adolescents are ideally suited for participative health program planning. Chapter Twenty-three also includes a special section on social marketing techniques. Each chapter includes a literature review of applicable studies of four adolescent lifestyle behaviors: sexual health; tobacco, alcohol, and drug use; physical activity and nutrition; and violence.

Chapter Twenty-four describes models of policy and legislation development, including a discussion of the necessity of an integrated approach to health promotion between different levels of policy-makers.

Chapter Twenty-five presents a review of community and policy level behavior change theories and models in chart form, including a vertical analysis of the conceptual framework, application, and benefits of each theory.
