Abstract:

Youth: Choices and Change presents a comprehensive guide to the psychology of change in adolescents and youths, with the purpose of stimulating change in lifestyle behavior, health promotion policies, and socio-cultural attitudes toward healthy lifestyles.

The first part of the second section of the book includes eight chapters as follows:

Chapter Eight / The Health Belief Model

Chapter Nine / The Transtheoretical Model and Stages of Change

Chapter Ten / The Theory of Reasoned Action

Chapter Eleven / The Theory of Planned Behavior

Chapter Twelve / The Goal-Setting Theory

Chapter Thirteen / The Self-Regulation Theory

Chapter Fourteen / The Sensation-Seeking Theory

Chapter Fifteen / At A Glance: The Individual Level Theories and Models for Behavior Change

Chapters Eight through Fifteen analyze multidimensional models for individual level change in adolescent behavior. The models begin with adolescent self-perceptions and expand to theories of how to affect these perceptions and practical applications of the theories. Also included are chapters discussing theories which describe a direct correlation between beliefs about outcomes of behaviors with reasoned action. Chapter Twelve presents a method for achieving behavioral change with the Goal-Setting Theory and discusses the implications of targeting behaviors instead of outcomes.

Each chapter includes a literature review of applicable studies of four adolescent lifestyle behaviors: sexual health; tobacco, alcohol, and drug use; physical activity and nutrition; and violence. Chapter Fifteen presents seven individual level change theories in chart form, including a vertical analysis of the conceptual framework, application, and benefits of each theory.
