Abstract:

This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using BCG vaccines. Originally developed for the prevention of tuberculosis, the BCG vaccine has recently been shown to have a protective effect against other mycobacterioses, particularly leprosy and Buruli ulcer. It also has been effective in immunotherapy for some forms of cancer, especially bladder cancer, and there have been reports of a reduced incidence of atopy in children vaccinated with BCG.

This is an article from the book Recent Advances in Immunization, 2nd edition, which covers combination vaccines, vaccine safety, influenza control, adolescent and adult immunization, human papillomavirus vaccines, and approaches to introducing new vaccines.
