Abstract:
This article provides basic background on PowderJect's (pharmaceutical company) particle-mediated epidermal delivery (PMED) of DNA vaccines, a technological advance that many individuals many not be familiar with. A description of the PowderJect hepatitis B project, which is a collaboration between PowderJect and GlaxoSmithKline is included, as a case study to demonstrate what has been achieved with this technology in the clinic to date. In the final section, the future opportunities for this technology and the use of genetic adjuvants with the PowderJect system are explored. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations. Keywords: Vaccines; Vaccine Development; Public Health; Immunization; Disease Prevention; DNA vaccines; PowderJect system; Antigen presenting cells; APC; Particle-mediated epidermal delivery; PMED; Hepatitis B; Genetic Adjuvantation
