Abstract:

This article discusses new vaccine strategies that are being studied in animal models, in this case in mice and monkeys (rhesus macaques) for the design of new mucosal vaccines. The authors focus primary on HIV as an example, though they also mention smallpox, where mucosal immunity is relevant as well, given its risk in bioterrorism. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations.
