Abstract:
Even if malaria affects many people, this article reflects about why there is no malaria vaccine today. With 40% of the world's population is at risk for malaria, 300 to 500 million cases of disease every year and between 1.4 and 2.7 million deaths a year, the need of a vaccine is presented and argued by the author. The article also discusses the economics of malaria vaccines, the developments in the field of malaria research vaccine and the current malaria vaccine trials, concluding with the role of partnerships between the MVI (Malaria Vaccine Initiative, a program of PATH with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and other public and private organizations. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations. Keywords: Vaccines; Vaccine Development; Public Health; Immunization; Disease Prevention; Malaria Vaccine; Malaria; MVI; Malaria Vaccine Initiative; Clinical trials
