Abstract:
This article starts arguing for the urgent need for an HIV vaccine and presents a brief panorama of the mortality and morbidity of the disease worldwide. The financial and logistic challenges encountered by the development of HIV vaccines are presented, with the major obstacles being of scientific nature. The evolution of vaccine paradigms and clinical trials are discussed and the author presents the 3 waves in this evolution: induction of antibodies; induction of cell-mediated immnunity; better and broader immune responses. The need of clinical trials in developing countries is defended, presenting thorough information of the HIV vaccines trials in different countries, its efficacy and preliminary results. The author concludes with a summary of the current challenges and lessons learned and the measures to be taken in order to know if current vaccines are protective and how better vaccines can be developed. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations. Keywords: Vaccines; Vaccine Development; Public Health; Immunization; Disease Prevention; HIV/AIDS; HIV vaccine; Clinical trials
