Abstract:

This article argues that finding new and effective vaccines for tuberculosis for the developing world, —along with the need to develop vaccines for malaria and AIDS— is one of the biggest current challenges. Information about mortality and morbidity due to TB is presented as well as the lessons to be learned from BCG vaccines in clinical studies and the situation of the new TB vaccine candidates. The relationship between TB vaccines for targeted populations (i.e. those infected with other diseases) is also discussed. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations.
