Abstract:
This article discusses the feasibility of developing an effective shigella vaccine as a way of controlling shigellosis. The author presents the need of the vaccine based on the burden disease according to an analysis of published studies, hat there are 160 million cases of shigellosis in the world each year, resulting in about 1.5 million deaths. The chapter covers three approaches to shigella vaccine development that are under active investigation: 1) parenteral O-specific polysaccharide conjugate vaccines; 2) nasal proteosomes delivering shigella LPS; and 3) live, attenuated invasive shigella deletion mutants that are administered orally. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations. Keywords: Vaccines; Vaccine Development; Public Health; Immunization; Disease Prevention; Shigella; Shighellosis; Infectious diseases
