Abstract:
Acute respiratory infections remain the leading cause of death in children and are also the leading infectious cause of death in adults. As Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is the leading bacterial cause of these infections, the development of a conjugate vaccine has been an important public health goal, though this has been frustrated by the large number of vaccine serotypes of pneumococci causing invasive disease. This chapter covers topics such as the serotypes of the vaccine, the efficacy as well as effectiveness studies in invasive disease. It also discusses the vaccine impact on carriage and on pneumonia among other things. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations. Keywords: Vaccines; Vaccine Development; Immunization; Disease Prevention; Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Pneumoniae; Pneumococci; Pneumococcus; Pneumonia; Antibiotic Resistance
