Abstract:

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that measles is responsible for 10% of deaths worldwide in children under 5 years of age. Worldwide, some 40 million cases and 800,000 deaths due to measles still occur every year; more than half of the deaths occur in Africa. This chapter describes the strategies being implemented in the Americas to interrupt indigenous measles transmission, as well as the results achieved so far. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations.
