Abstract:

This article broadly discusses the fundamental importance of vaccines in meeting the challenges posed by emerging and reemerging diseases, as well as new strategies for vaccine development. It also discusses four emerging or re-emerging disease threats—HIV/AIDS, West Nile virus, bioterrorism, and SARS—and the role that vaccines will play in our efforts to cope with these threats. This is a chapter included in Vaccines. Preventing Disease and Protecting Health, a book that celebrates the ways in which vaccines have played a role in improving the health of the world's populations.
