Abstract:

Health Statistics from the Americas, 2003 Edition presents summarized mortality data by age group and sex for all country-years received after publication of the 1998 edition in this series. The 2003 edition presents a large number of country-years of available data-177 data years from 35 countries. It includes 115 country-years of mortality data coded with the Ninth Revision (ICD-9) and 62 country-years with the Tenth Revision (ICD-10) of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. These data are presented for cause groups according to the PAHO 6/61 List for tabulation of ICD-9 and the PAHO 6/67 List for tabulation of ICD-10. The Annex Tables provide tabular information on the status of death registries in countries of the Americas, and the percentage of deaths assigned to the category - signs, symptoms and ill-defined conditions in countries of the Americas. Reference tables for cause groups of the A9 and M9 Lists for collection and tabulation of ICD-9 coded mortality are shown as well as the PAHO 6/61 and PAHO 6/67 Lists for the tabulation of ICD-9 and ICD-10. Lastly, the availability of mortality data by country from 1980-2001 in the PAHO database is detailed.
