Abstract:

Better Health: A Handbook of Behavior Change is a one-of-a-kind manual for communities to reduce disease, disability, and premature death throughout the life cycle. This chapter of the book deals with acute damaging events -motor vehicle crashes, falls, injuries from machinery, drawings, poisonings, gun shots, fires, smoke inhalation, lacerations, head trauma, suffocation, an other intentional or unintentional traumata. Mortality data due to injuries and violence is presented and how roadway safety education and prevention can reduce accidents. In the section devoted to intentional injuries, suicide and violence are presented. Risk factors for suicide are discussed.
