Abstract:
Better Health: A Handbook of Behavior Change is a one-of-a-kind manual for communities to reduce disease, disability, and premature death throughout the life cycle. This chapter of the book discusses how health can be improved from pregnancy to infants and children up to 14 years old. In the section about pregnancy, risk factors for low birth-weight, fetal anomalies and infant deaths, social risk personal biological and behavioral factors and psychological risks factors are included. From birth through age 4 years the prevention and early detection of developmental problems are discussed, along with preventing postnatal disabilities, reducing sudden infant death syndrome and increasing immunization. In this age group strategies for reducing rates of unintentional injuries is widely covered (from motor vehicles to cuts and lacerations, firearms and domestic accidents) as is child abuse and neglect.
