Abstract:

The authors assert that this paper has been written because of the common misperception that health promotion cannot or, at the very least, has not appreciably increased participation in leisure-time physical activities. Their conclusion is that health promotion can and has increased participation in leisure-time physical activities. Characteristics of health promotion are described and examples of successful site-specific efforts to increase physical activity are provided.
