Abstract:

A natural disaster may affect the nutritional status of the population by affecting one or more components of the food chain depending on the type, duration, and extent of the disaster, as well as the food and nutritional conditions existing in the area before the catastrophe. Chapter Nine of the PAHO Book "Natural Disasters: Protecting the Public's Health" deals with the expected consequences of disasters on the food chain, the possible adverse effects of large-scale food distribution, how to set priorities and how to deliver immediate relief in such cases.
