Abstract:

This is the seventh chapter of the PAHO Book "Natural Disasters: Protecting the Public's Health". Natural disasters may increase the risk of preventable diseases due to adverse changes in the areas such as population density, population displacement or contamination of water supply. The chapter presents the principles of preventing and controlling communicable diseases after a disaster: setting up a surveillance system, laboratory services, vaccination programs.
