Abstract:

This first chapter of the PAHO Book "Natural Disasters: Protecting the Public's Health" discusses health problems that are common to all natural disasters (communicable diseases, nutrition and food, mental health problems). The chapter also discusses health problems according to the type of disaster (earthquakes, destructive winds, floods, etc) and summarizes mistaken assumptions that are associated with the impact of disasters on public health and the myths and realities of natural disasters that managers and disaster planners should be familiar with.
