Abstract:
This is a section of the book The Challenge of Epidemiology: Issues and Selected Readings. Edited by four eminent epidemiologists, this book consolidates, for the first time, a core of landmark articles on the evolution, scope and limitations, uses, and prospects of epidemiology. An outstanding feature of the book is the inclusion of the editors' assessments of the realm of epidemiology, where it is and where it should be going. It represents a useful tool for both students and practicing professionals and provides a much-needed frame of reference for reorienting the practice of epidemiology. The book is a collection of 91 articles, grouped in five parts. The authors of this article identifies and describes the inevitable problem of chronic disease based on social (certain races and groups), economic (the ages and economic distribution, the lack of hospital beds) and medical (prevention, diagnosis, cure, alleviation and terminal care) aspects. The article also differentiates the mortality, morbidity and disability, and duration of different chronic diseases since each disease requires a different approach. Moreover, the authors then provide a recommendation to the inadequacy of care for the different disease cases. It refers to the Massachusetts Cancer Program as an example of what could be done in reference to public health. Keywords: Epidemiology; Cancer; Chronic diseases; Social Aspects; Economic aspects; Medical Aspects; Public Health; Massachusetts Cancer Program; Health Departments; Mortality; Morbidity; Disability; Medical Facilities
