Abstract:

In this paper, I will explain a useful application of mathematical modeling within a school setting, as well as a progressive use of graphing calculators in mathematical modeling. For the project, I used the concrete problem of baton-passing in relay races, and analysed the students' performances in the process of problem-solving. As a result, the following suggestions emerged. The students made effective use of their mathematical knowledge and ideas when they used graphing calculators in mathematical modeling. In this way, they were able to leave the door open to their decision making.
