Abstract:
The extant specimens of Cephalopoda in the collections of the Zoology Department at Tokyo University Museum have recently been catalogued for the first time. They are relatively modest in number (around 280 lots) but include a large proportion of types (23 species group names in 50 lots), which are listed here with their current identifications. Most of these types are of species group names described by Sasaki (19 in 41 lots) and include the type species of three genera: Eucleoteuthis Berry, 1916; Idioteuthis Sasaki, 1916; and Ornithoteuthis Okada, 1927. The types of the four species described by other authors are of Opisthoteuthis depressa Ijima & Ikeda, 1895; Alloposus pacificus Ijima in Ijima & Ikeda, 1902; and of Loligo kensaki and Sepia sasakii, Wakiya & Ishikawa, 1921. Publication of this list identifies these type specimens clearly for the first time and rectifies some of the erroneous information about Japanese type material that was included in a recent collection of reviews of the Cephalopoda.Document Type: Research article
