Abstract:
This paper explores the contribution made by Johnson's Dictionary to the development of usage notes in monolingual English dictionaries. In order to investigate the process of development, the purpose of the modern usage note is considered, and dictionaries produced before and after Johnson's are examined to discover the nature and extent of their provision of usage information and to assess the influence on later dictionaries of Johnson's approach. Keywords: antiphospholipid syndrome; recurrent miscarriage; thrombosis
