Abstract:
This paper investigates the treatment of technical terms in early dictionaries and encyclopaedias and the use of illustrations to exemplify them. It argues that there was an early realization in seventeenth-century lexicographers that certain words, particularly scientific, mathematical or geometric terms, are much better understood when illustrated. Johnson's decision not to include illustrations in his Dictionary is examined in this context. Keywords: antiphospholipid syndrome; recurrent miscarriage; thrombosis
