Abstract:

This article draws from psychoanalytic theory for the sake of theological construction—particularly christological construction. Interdisciplinary in scope, I link Sigmund Freud’s theory of narcissism with Jacques Derrida’s understanding of “gift” for the purpose of constructing a psychoanalytically informed theology of the cross. I point to rabbinical midrash—a source that fills in the gaps left open by the Hebrew Bible—as additional evidence in support of my claim regarding the biblical deity’s narcissism.
