A New Beginning, Again

Abstract:

In spring 2003 the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the American Academy of Religion crafted a strategic plan for the coming years. The immediate occasion for this was the academy's centennial. One feature of this plan was the decision to hold stand-alone annual meetings of the AAR, ending the custom in place since the 1970s of meeting with the Society of Biblical Literature. This presidential address discusses the historical background of this decision, the process by which it was made, and the contemporary concerns that prompted it. It also takes up some of the concerns that have arisen among members in the wake of the decision and suggests some responses. Finally, it looks at a number of deeper anxieties that surfaced within the study of religion by the decision to hold stand-alone meetings.
