Abstract:

This eminent group of scholars contributes a range of institutional, historical, sociological, and technical expertise to a debate on the issues raised in the book. The aim is to present a balanced overview. Thus, Seymour Martin Lipset has previously argued that class no longer has a central position in politics and that other social characteristics, or value preferences, form the bases of political divisions. In contrast, John Goldthorpe and Michael Hout have argued that class remains central to politics and many other areas of social activity. Peter Mair gives a perspective from institutional political science.
