Since Finland joined the EU in 1995, the national legislation has been widely harmonised with the community legislation, particularly where environmental protection and nature conservation are concerned. The legislation on waste, air protection and water protection was also renewed during the 1990s, and new legislation has been enacted on issues including environmental impact assessments and compensation for environmental damage.
