Abstract:
Twice a year, the OECD Economic Outlook analyses the major trends that will mark the next two years. It provides in-depth coverage of the economic policy measures required to foster high and sustainable growth in each Member country. Recent measures and forthcoming developments in major non-OECD economies in East Asia, Central and Eastern Europe (particularly Russia), and South America are also evaluated in detail. Each edition of this Outlook provides a unique tool to keep abreast of world economic developments. In addition to the themes featured in every semi-annual edition, this issue also addresses these important questions: - What levels of investment and saving are needed to sustain growth in OECD countries, and what are the implications for short-run developments? As a number of countries have large imbalances between saving and investment, how far is adjustment necessary and how will it come about? In particular, what are the implications for exchange rates? - Does product market liberalisation help raise employment levels? What are the likely effects of liberalisation on employment security and earnings inequality? Does labour market reform have repercussions on the growth and innovation strategies of firms? - Are there sufficient incentives for young people and older adults to invest in post-compulsory education? What are the benefits for firms in providing training to employees? What are the equity implications of public spending on higher education? - What has been the impact of agricultural support policies on trade and environment? Have they been effective in raising farm income? Is there need for further policy reform?Page Count: 274Document Type: Review article
