Abstract:
TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION TO THIS ISSUE THE IMPLEMENTATION AND THE EFFECTS OF REGULATORY REFORM: PAST EXPERIENCE AND CURRENT ISSUES The move towards more competitive service markets: an overview of its effects on firms and consumers and the new challenges facing policy-makers and regulators. REGULATION, MARKET STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS Prospective and effective competition has brought about productivity and quality improvements and reduced the prices of telecommunications services. REGULATION, INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE IN THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY INDUSTRY Efficiency in electricity supply is enhanced by both privatisation and unbundling of generation from transmission. REGULATION, MARKET STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE IN AIR PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION Efficiency increases and fares decline when regulations on air transport and market structures become friendlier to competition. REGULATORY REFORM IN ROAD FREIGHT Road freight has been liberalised across the OECD area but the restrictive web of bilateral and/or multilateral agreements continues to discriminate against foreign hauliers. REGULATORY REFORM IN RETAIL DISTRIBUTION Restrictions on large outlets and shop opening hours still hamper competition in several OECD countries.Document Type: Review article
