Abstract:The signs and symptoms exhibited by a patient with suspected seafood allergy may also be observed associated with adverse reactions to such substances as toxins and preservatives. In many instances, these alternative possibilities can be ruled out after a careful history and physical examination. If food allergy remains a possibility after this is accomplished, then skin testing with food extracts may help in the evaluation. If the diagnosis remains uncertain and the identity of the particular food causing the syndrome is unclear, food challenge may be warranted. Avoidance is still the treatment of choice for seafood allergy.
