During the past decade much progress has been made toward understanding the chemical nature and immunological effects of Lawrence's transfer factor. To a significant degree this progress has been enhanced by the development of animal models and an in vitro assay. The evidence now favors antigen-specific effects of the material, although the crude preparations also contain substances that may amplify or suppress immunologic and inflammatory responses in non-specific ways. There is evidence that transfer factor contains polypeptide and that it binds to antigens in an immunologically specific manner. The role of transfer factor in clinical medicine is still being defined but there are indications that it may be efficacious in treatment and prophylaxis of certain infectious diseases.
