A continuing need for valid data expressing allergen prevalence has focused attention on the limitations of sampling by fallout on greased slides. Rotating arm impactors and suction traps now offer quantitatively valid alternatives to "gravitational" collection, suitable for many applications. For each approach, sampling effectiveness will vary with a particle's physical properties and with collector characteristics which include adhesive performance, sampling time and alignment with airflow. Recoveries also vary with sampler placement, suggesting that collections near ground level, and even by personal monitors, may ultimately help to clarify otherwise non-apparent exposure risks.
