Qatar is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and is surrounded on all other sides by the Gulf. Nearly 50% of the country's total population, which is less than 1m by most estimates, live in Doha, the capital and largest city. Since achieving independence from the UK in 1971, Qatar has become one of the wealthiest nations in the Middle East and currently boasts one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. This prosperity can be attributed almost entirely to hydrocarbons exports, which account for more than 60% of total GDP. Qatar holds the world's third-largest gas reserves and new technological developments are set to boost oil production to more than 1m barrels per day by 2011. The Qatari government is investing heavily in human capital. Education City, a new project sponsored by the Qatar Foundation, has brought the world's top universities and research centres to the country.
