Bulgaria covers some 111,000 sq km of the south-east Balkan peninsula and offers a diverse topography with mountains, beaches and plains. A proud country, its motto is "unity makes strength", reputed to be the last words of Khan Kubrat, the legendary founder of Old Great Bulgaria in 632. The country is not blessed with a wealth of natural resources, though it does possess a few Black Sea oil wells and significant lead deposits. EU membership is set to bring the country a host of benefits, but in the future one of its main problems could be its 7.97m population, which is shrinking and ageing. With a growth rate of minus 0.8%, it has the lowest population growth rate of any EU member state.
