Brunei, a sultanate located on the north-western coast of Borneo, obtained full independence from the British government in 1984 and later joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Due to its economic dependence on a finite amount of hydrocarbons, Brunei's government is diversifying its economy, marketing itself as an Islamic financial hub, as well as an off-shore financial centre. The administration is also emphasising the sultanate's potential for ecotourism, pledging 58% of its rainforest to sustainable development. Brunei's population, according to official sources, is approximately 380,000, of which two-thirds are Malay, while the remaining one-third are mostly ethnically Chinese.
