Emerging Unmanned Aerial Remote Sensing System for Intertidal Zone Modeling: A Low-Cost Method of Collecting Remote Sensing Data for Modeling Short-Term Effects of Sea Level Rise, Part II: Close-Range Airborne Remote Sensing
Abstract:As stated in Part I of this work, current geospatial models of coastal areas at risk of inundation by sea level rise (SLR) typically depict a 50-year timescale. We established that the 36 mm required accuracy for depicting risk at a 20-year timescale is obtainable. This paper focuses on the development and testing of a low-cost, easily deployable, Close-range Aerial Remote Sensing (CARS) system capable of obtaining geodetic-grade elevation data from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). System design consideration, preliminary results from simulation and field testing, discussions, and conclusions are presented. The preliminary results with a low-cost CARS system that weighs less than 200 g and consumes less than 4 W are within the specifications required to map the SLR effect on a 20 year timescale.
