Biological control of stem canker of greenhouse tomatoes caused by Botrytis cinerea

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of various chemical and biological agents on stem canker caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers.: Fr. on tomato plants grown in sawdust under near-commercial greenhouse conditions. Lesion lengths following treatment with RootShield® and strain S33 of Rhodosporidium diobovatum Newell & Hunter, applied as post-inoculation sprays, were significantly smaller than those in inoculated controls. These treatments also increased fruit yield and decreased the number of dead plants compared with inoculated controls. Decree®, Prestop®, and R. diobovatum S33, applied as sprays, prevented the occurrence of stem canker and increased fruit yield in tomato. The number of dead plants was also smaller with these treatments than with the other treatments and in inoculated controls. These results suggest that, in tomato, post-inoculation sprays of RootShield® and R. diobovatum S33 can reduce lesion lengths, and that a preventive spray of Decree®, Prestop®, and R. diobovatum S33 might prevent stem canker, under near-commercial greenhouse conditions.Key words: biological control, Botrytis cinerea, Bacillus subtilis, Rhodosporidium diobovatum, grey mold.

Nous avons effectué des expériences dans le but d'étudier l'effet de divers agents chimiques et biologiques sur la jambe noire causée par Botrytis cinerea Pers.: Fr. chez des plants de tomate cultivés dans de la sciure de bois, dans des conditions de serre quasi-commerciales. La longueur des lésions après une application de RootShield® et de la souche Rhodosporidium diobovatum S33 Newell & Hunter appliqués par vaporisation post-inoculation était significa tivement inférieure à celle du témoin inoculé. Ces traitements ont également augmenté le rendement en fruits et a diminué le nombre de plants morts comparativement au témoin inoculé. Du Decree®, du Prestop® et du R. diobovatum S33 appliqués par vaporisation ont empêché l'apparition de jambe noire et ont augmenté le rendement en tomates. Le nombre de plants morts était également inférieur suite à ces traitements comparativement aux autres traitements et au témoin inoculé. Ces résultats indiquent que les vaporisations post-inoculation de RootShield® et du R. diobovatum S33 peuvent réduire la longueur des lésions, et qu'une vaporisation préventive de Decree®, de Prestop® et du R. diobovatum S33 pourrait empêcher l'apparition de jambe noire chez la tomate dans des conditions de serre quasi-commerciales.Mots clés : lutte biologique, Botrytis cinerea, Bacillus subtilis, Rhodosporidium diobovatum, pourriture grise.
