Effects of antecedent fermentative and respiratory growth on the detection of chloramine-stressed Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium

In vitro laboratory studies were performed to assess the effects of antecedent growth conditions on the recovery of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028 following chloramine disinfection. Six- and 18-h cultures of each organism were grown under aerobic, fermentative, and nitrate-reducing conditions prior to disinfection. At predetermined time intervals during a 10-min exposure to chloramine, survivors were surface plated on nonselective recovery media to determine Cnt values. It was observed that nitrate-reducing growth predisposed the test organisms towards an increased sensitivity to chloramine stress over cells grown under fermentation or aerobic conditions (p < 0.01).Key words: Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, chloramine, survival, antecedent growth conditions.

Des études de laboratoire in vitro ont cherché à évaluer comment certaines conditions de croissance auxquelles étaient soumises les cultures pouvaient influencer la récupération de l'Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 et de la Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028 suite à une désinfection à la chloramine. Des cultures de 6 et 18 h ont été produites pour chacune de ces espèces dans diverses conditions, soit des conditions aérobies, des conditions de fermentation ou des conditions de réduction des nitrates et ce avant les essais de désinfection. À différents intervalles pré-déterminés pendant une exposition de 10 min à la chloramine, une recherche des survivants a été effectuée par ensemencement en surface de milieux non sélectifs pour déterminer les valeurs Cnt. Il a été constaté qu'une croissance favorisant la réduction des nitrates rendait les bactéries plus sensibles au stress à la chloramine comparativement aux cellules cultivées dans des conditions aérobies ou de fermentation (p < 0,01).Mots clés : Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, chloramine, survie, conditions préalables de croissance.[Traduit par la Rédaction]
