Abstract:
Over the years, financial advisors and gift planners have become increasingly sensitive to the need to address the "soft side" of gift planning-family values, family unity and family communication. Despite the growing awareness that family unity is critical to the estate planning process, only a few authors have identified substance abuse as a problem that affects wealthy families. This article identifies indicators of family problems stemming from substance abuse that could derail a planned gift and offers suggestions about ways advisors can exhibit leadership that may help the whole family beyond just creating documents or closing a gift.Document Type: Research article
