'It's Best Practice': SMART targets – evidence or assertion?

This article explores the origin of SMART targets, the evidence base for target-setting and the application of SMART targets to the ESOL context. It argues that the research findings from second language learning suggest that SMART targets have given us a flawed, inaccurate model of learning where chunking language to be learned into fake misrepresentations of SMART targets is making an assumption which is potentially damaging to learner progress.
