Open Access The Scientific Investigation of Marine Fires and Explosions

Abstract

The forensic investigation of a marine fire or explosion must be carried out using a structured methodology such as the scientific method. The investigation will include a preliminary inspection to establish the area of origin of the fire or explosion, followed by a detailed examination using various techniques to identify the fuel first ignited and the ignition source. Explosion calculations, fire modeling, and testing should also be carried out to validate the conclusions, where appropriate. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the subject with references for those who wish to pursue particular areas. It is not intended as a manual for fire and explosion investigation.
