K.", abstract = "This paper presents an Active Operator Guidance System (AOGS) that has been developed as a guidance tool for operators on safe maneuvering of container ships in coastal and deep waters. The system is capable of predicting ship trajectories in surge, sway and yaw motions, accounting for the effects of current, wind and water depth as well as ship command parameters on rudder and propeller. Operators can, in actual sea conditions, actively assess trial commands on various control-input scenarios and predicted ship trajectory responses under those ambient sea conditions. The predicted parameters of vessel response, such as track reach, turning circle and overshoot, are displayed graphically on the system console to provide guidance on any potential dangers. The system has been validated and verified for a container ship with sea trial data from its ship manual and actual sea voyage data. Comparisons between the predictions and data are in reasonable agreement.", }
