Abstract:

The wearing of veils and crosses both raise issues about the manifestation of religious identity in society. The arguments around these practices in recent UK debates are identified and discussed, and the theme of 'obligation' in Islam and Christianity is analysed. While the wearing of neither veil nor cross is an absolute and universal obligation for Muslims or Christians respectively, both are ways for believers to express with confidence their identity in relation to self, to others and to God, and as such are deserving of legal protection.
