Abstract:

State visits are one of the oldest forms of diplomatic contact between the leaders of states. Redolent of the pomp of previous ages, the modern era has seen a vertical rise in the frequency of state visits.

This article examines the mechanics of the state visit and considers their purpose in contemporary diplomacy, as well as some of their unintended consequences.
