Abstract:

President Vladimir Putin forcefully restored Russian foreign policy to the heart of a brewing Middle East that was reminiscent of tensions at the peak of the Cold War. Under Putin Russia appeared determined to protect its relationship with Iran as the latter faced international pressure to halt its nuclear programme and to support a Syrian regime that was facing criticisms for its destabilizing role in Lebanon mainly through Hezbollah, a crucial tool for both Syria and Iran to broaden their regional influence and defy the West.
