Abstract:

This article compares the way in which the novels Los recuerdos del porvenir (1963) by Elena Garro and La ciudad y el viento (1962) by Dolores Castro portray the Mexican cristero wars and the role of women in the Church-State conflicts of the 1920s and 1930s. Particular attention is paid to the representation of physical and psychological violence perpetrated by female characters in these novels and the narrative strategies used to avoid dismissing female violence and force the reader to question traditional gender roles by acknowledging the varied contributions that women made to the cristero wars.
