Abstract:

Drawings invite their viewers to enquire the acts of creation from which they emerged. By tracing the >traits< (the strokes and lines) during the process of perception, it seems to be possible to experience once again the time which elapsed during the process of production. The 18th century is characterized by an increasing popularity of the >trait<, which is reflected in the rise of facsimiles and amateur drawing. It is this enthusiasm for the supposed immediacy of drawings which in turn led to its own problematization. Drawings by German artists around 1800 as well as Goethe's 'Werther< novel show that this challenge resulted in programmatic attempts to create >drawings without traits< - a concept that calls attention to the intricacies which lie in the temporal relations between >traits< and their tracing.
