Abstract:

Tobacco use leads to serious addiction and is the leading preventable cause of death in Canada. Despite the myriad health issues and diseases attributable to tobacco use, it is often ignored in the planning and provision of addictions treatment. Historically, the addictions-treatment field has functioned separately from the tobacco-intervention field, with a consequent lack of attention to nicotine addiction alongside other addictions. However, efforts are being made to integrate perspectives and experiences to respond more comprehensively to people with addictions by including tobacco among substances addressed. This article describes recent initiatives in incorporating tobacco treatment into addictions treatment in a women's residential addictions treatment program in Vancouver, Canada.
