Abstract:Once it was thought e-commerce would wipe out local communities and businesses. Now it seems the old economy is fighting back, with established companies developing 'hybrid' strategies that exploit their physical assets andcapitalise on customer loyalty. E-commerce is even making traditional business leaner and fitter, automating routine functions and leaving staff to concentrate on higher-margin activities. The internet 'pure plays' might have the bright ideas, but can they survive without a presence on the high street?
